■ Luxembourg Philharmonie
Christian de Portzamparc (1944-)

The “Salle de concert Grande Duchesse Joséphine Charlotte”built in Luxembourg, designed by the French architect Christian de Portzamparc who is a French architect to be awarded the Pritzker Prizein 1995. The hall was built on the avenue Kennedy, the main road of Kirchberg plateau. With its rounded shapes and it whiteness, the Philharmonie building stood out above the other buildings in this district. In the heart of a new district it stands a new monument.
The architect designed a unique “metal curtains” which were spaced at random. The filter is opaque, or transparent. Sometimes it lets the sun in, or some views, sometimes it closes the foyer in on itself. The brief for the main auditorium was precisely a “shoe-box” which means quite simply a parallelepiped. However, it’s impossible to keep the sides parallel because of the echo which should be avoided in concert halls.
What did the architect do to meet the brief from commissioner and solve the echo issue? To combine with the intelligence of architect, precise calculation of computer program and the professional suggestions of acoustician, this building was an acoustic masterpiece.

Santiago Calatrava (1951-)

Before 1986, Satolas was a small country halt. The trains that actually stop here can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Until the success of TGV, the French high-speed train, The French Railway Company decided to create a new station here: “Satolas”, a new TGV station. The station concourse ,visible for miles around, was designed an expressive shape that everyone calls “the bird”. At the origin of this shape is a sculpture which didn't represent a bird but an eye.
But how did architect go from a 70 cm sculpture weighing just a few kilos to a building 140 metres long, 40 metres high and with a 100-metre span?
Let's see how the architect overcome all kinds of difficulties with his creativity and architectural techniques and complete the the most surprising building which people now come here to admire for miles around.
