Nina Simone started playing the piano at the age of four. She had to finish her music studies without a degree because, being black, she was not allowed to take the exam. She came to singing through a job as a piano teacher, improvising her own pieces from the start. She chose the stage name Simone as a tribute to the actress Simone Signoret. A 1959 concert at New York City Town Hall made her famous around the world. Nina Simone used her popularity early on for a social upheaval in the USA. She was an integral part of the black civil rights movement of the 1960s. This is one of the reasons why she still enjoys cult status today and keeps reaching new fans with her music, who celebrate her distinctive voice, soulful piano playing and her timeless songs.
